HAIR EXTENSION CARE: DO’S AND DON’TS
We often get asked this question at the salon, “If I get hair extensions will it damage my hair”?
One thing to remember about hair extensions is that they do have the potential to damage your hair if they are not taken care of at home. We feel strongly about educating our clients on the do’s and don’ts for extension care.
Do
Do use an extension brush at the root. This is an important do on your part when your extensions grow out 1-6 weeks after application. This brush can save your natural hair from being pulled or causing any permanent baldness from aggressive yanking from your regular hair brush.
Do brush your hair 3-4 times a day, especially before taking a shower. If your extensions are grown out away from your scalp then hold the extensions at the root and then gently brush your hair downward.
Do wash your hair with alcohol free shampoo to avoid weakening your extension glue.
Do avoid chlorinated water or salty beaches. If you are going to swim in these waters, braid extensions or apply conditioner throughout hair and tight hair tightly to avoid tangling or dreading.
Do apply any hair care products from mid-shaft down, avoiding your extension bonds.
Don’t
Don’t wash your hair 24-48 hours after extension application.
Don’t sleep with wet hair. This rule is okay 1-3 weeks of extension application since the extension bond is tight at the root. However, when the extensions grow out, leaving your hair wet to dry can cause knotting at the root between new growth hair and your extension bond.
Don’t sleep with loose open hair, braid or put your hair in a bun to avoid any tangling.
Don’t use heat tools on the extension bond.
Don’t bleach hair with extension bonds in tact or any chemical straightening/curl process.
If you follow our Do’s and Don’ts you will be on the road to enjoying healthy extensions.
